Congratulations!

Congratulations to all of our competitors in this year's BBBQ. There were a total of four competitors and a good time was had by all.

Alas, in the end, there can be only one winner declared and that was Pickin' & Grillin' manned by Jeff Dickerson and his buddy Steve. In fact, P&G swept the results by taking 1st in both the ribs and Boston butt categories.

In an odd of turn of events, the results in both categories turned out to be the same for all teams.

RIBS/BUTT

1. Pickin' & Grillin'
2. Fat Pigs Need Smokin' Too (Wes & Berta [in absentia])
3. Roosterneck (Ron Day)
4. BBQ Haiku (Lee & Darrell)

Thanks go out to all of you who cooked and brought sides, cookies, etc. and helped out with the children. Also, thanks to the judges who gave their time & effort to eat some of the South's best BBQ. Special thanks go out to Angie who continues to put up with me and my whims (and even contributes by cooking mac & cheese and an awesome banana pudding).

Again, I had a great time. The plan is for this to be an annual event so I will keep everyone posted as to next year's date.

Competition Update!

NEW CATEGORY: WHOLE HOG!!!

These are called Teacup Pigs. Go Google them. Angie wants one as a pet, I want one for lunch.
Seriously, the 1st Annual Backyard BBQ is this weekend. The schedule was posted previously, but I wanted to make a couple clarifications.
1) I'm going to try to make this as real as possible. As such, we're going to try to make the judging double blind. In other words, I'll have a couple of boxes for you with number on them. Inside the box, you put your ribs in the box. No greenery, not your name, just the ribs and possibly a little cup of sauce (my house, my rules). This is dropped off at the drop off point. One of the judges picks up all the boxes, takes these to the judging table where the ribs are judged. The judges only know the number of the rib, not the team name.
2) You can bring over your grill on Friday night or first thing Saturday morning and get started.
3) You can use commercial rubs, sauces, etc. and it can be pre-made.
4) If you want, you can rub your pork down prior to Friday night. Just don't start cooking it.
5) I think I forgot some stuff...it's late.
Poker game Friday night.

1st Annual Backyard BBQ Competition

1st Annual Backyard BBQ Competition as sponsored by R.A. Brewing, March 19 & 20.

Format is as follows:
  • Two separate categories will be judged: Boston Butt and Ribs
  • Blind judging will be done by a panel of at least 3 judges on both categories
  • Winners will be recognized in both categories
  • Grand Champion will be determined by highest combined score. In the event of a tie, highest score in Boston Butt wins.
Events are scheduled as follows:
  • March 19, Friday night poker game at 8:00 pm
  • March 20, Saturday morning - start cooking whenever, I'll be up
  • March 20, Saturday 2:00 pm - Ribs turn in
  • March 20, Saturday 5:00 pm - Boston Butt turn in
  • March 20, Saturday 6:00 pm - Awards

I will most likely also be cooking a brisket. I will not be cooking chicken. Angie wil probably make some mac & cheese and I will make some beans.

If you haven't realized this yet, this is also the 1st weekend of the NCAA basketball tournament. Therefore, we can probably have a couple of friendly wagers on the games. It's also opening weekend of turkey season.

Let me know if you are interested in cooking, judging, eating, etc. I think six teams is about the maximum.
